The world's biggest contract chip manufacturer, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, has shifted 1000 engineers to its facilities in Tainan's Southern Taiwan Science Park to meet the massive demand for its 5nm chips.

A report in Asia Times said the increased demand had made TSMC the leading contractor making semiconductors, with control of more than half of the third-party fabrication market of nearly US$70 billion (A$90.1 billion) in January.

The growth in orders was due to Apple, Qualcomm, AMD and MediaTek needing supplies and hence the engineers were being sent in five of six batches, the report said.

The company's aim is to boost its monthly 5nm manufacturing from 60,000 to 70,000 wafers to 120,000.

In November, TSMC reached a milestone in its efforts to start 3nm chip production, with with the beam-raising ceremony for its 3nm process fab at Tainan's Southern Taiwan Science Park.

Beam-raising refers to the placing of the last beam of a building and generally signifies that construction has been more or less completed.

TSMC's share price has jumped by more than 70% in the last 12 months, and the company is now valued at US$560.7 billion.
