Epson shines brightly

Epson is well-known for its printers – and it should not be overlooked for its amazing array of – dare I call them such an old term - data projectors.

At the Integrate 2015 exhibition in Melbourne, 25-27 August, Epson will show that the humble data projector is a multi-media device capable of 24-hour use and of course stunning brightness, colour and energy efficiency.

In part, it is due to Epson’s new 3LCD RGB technology versus the more familiar single chip DLP (Digital Light Processor developed originally in 1987 by Texas Instruments). 3LCD may be more expensive but it gives superior colour luminance, vivid and sharp images, brightness, whiter whites, deeper blacks and smoother motion.

And in part it is due to using laser light as a source giving up to 30,000 hours life (warranted) compared to a fraction of that time with traditional halogen bulbs.

The most interesting projector is the EH-LS10000. The EH stands for Elite Home and it is the world’s first to combine laser and 3LCD.

It is a native 1080p, 16:9 projector, with 2D to 3D conversion (and two, 3D glasses); 4K enhancement; and will upscale content to achieve maximum detail. Connectivity is via Ethernet Lan, RCA, Component, D-sub 15 pin, and two HDMI (one MHL). It can be ceiling mounted and has a RS232c input control.

One the more boring scale is the boardroom projector that can project a 300” image. The EB-1985WU has a price of A$2399. It too uses 3LCD and a light source (750-hour lamp) capable of 4,800 lumens of colour and white brightness. It has a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA)

Its major feature is connectivity – Wi-Fi, WiDI, Miracast, LAN, USB, HDMI, HDMI/MH, two D-Sub computer, and RCA. It can be ceiling mounted and remote controlled.

We move to what is called a venue projector - the EB-Z10000U that is designed for long throw, 10,000 lumens brightness and 24-hopur continuous use. It has a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) and can project up to a 500” screen. It uses dual lamps with a life of between 1000 and 4000 hours (depends on mode) and a liquid cooling system. Connectivity is via RCA, D-Sub, HDMI, DVI, BNC, LAN, USB and an optional Wi-Fi unit. It has remote control capability.

Last is the Meeting Mate EB-1430Wi that is a whiteboard projector, usually mounted above the whiteboard (or any flat surface you can write on). It is an interactive device – you can draw and save images, wirelessly display content, and using special pens touch, draw, select and interact with the display. It will project up to 100” screen, has 3300 lumens, 4000-6000 hour life, and a variety of inputs (including computer connectivity).

Over the past twenty plus years, I have relied on Epson projectors in my former business. I preferred them due to the use of LCD instead of DLP – which I found generally gave ‘off’ colours.

Its good to see the advances in 3LCD and laser.
