5 essential tips for schedule control in project management

By Guest Writer

GUEST OPINION: In today’s fast-moving business world, you need to have complete schedule control in your project management plans. The days of writing a daily plan out and having a meeting first thing in the morning to discuss it are long gone.

Today, businesses need a more efficient way of planning and monitoring, which is where schedule control software comes into play.

As with every other type of computer program or software, there are some does and don’ts that you should be aware of. There are many tips that we can provide to maximize your schedule control, but we are going to discuss the five most essential ones.

  1. Know Your Goals: Before you can set up any type of schedule control you need to know where you want the project to lead. The result is the main aspect of the project, so set the goal in stone. If the client decides to change their minds midway through the project, or if the top managers have changed the plan, a good schedule control software will allow you the ability to change the goal on the fly. This means that even though you are working to meet the first goal, the plan can effectively be changed in the software and the steps already taken can be re-managed through the software. Reducing the amount of wasted time that was put into the project this far.
  2. Breakdown: After you have set the goal that you want to achieve, it is time to use project scheduling software that gives you access to tools that will help break the project down into smaller, more manageable pieces. The plan may look like a huge task to the people that you assign to it, but once things have been broken down in understandable steps for each person, they will be able to grasp the idea of what is needed and will be able to stay on task, and on time.
  3. Dependencies: To get to the finale of the project you will have smaller projects that need to be done. These are known as dependencies because without completing these smaller requirements, you and your team will never be able to reach the final goal. This is one of the main reasons why it is so important to use software designed to track and highlight every step of the project, ensuring that team members stay on task and do not try to take shortcuts or jump ahead before the previous task is completed.
  4. Performance: A good project schedule will allow you to track the performance of everyone on the team. If you have someone that is struggling to keep up, you can see it through the software and reach out to them to find a solution. If they are confused, or simply not producing what they need to, you can make changes without waiting for the project to crash due to one person. If you are seeing a low performance from all the people on the team you will know that you need to make some changes, either in the plan or in the people.
  5. Online Collaboration: You will find that people today like the option of working from home. Many companies can now be run through online platforms and software, such as planning schedules and daily tasks. Your scheduling software should have the ability to be accessed anywhere that your team members choose to work. Being able to collaborate with all the team members throughout the workday is essential to the project.

You can see why having good schedule control during your project management is imperative for any size of the project. You will want to make sure that you get a program that is backed by solid performance and professional people to help you through any problems that you may have. Do not try to stick with older methods when there is a much easier, and more efficient, way of completing every step of the project.
