Is your business investing heavily in digital tools and technologies this year, in a bid to boost efficiency and productivity? If you answered in the affirmative, you're far from alone.

Around Australia, organisations of all shapes and sizes are spending significant amounts on solutions and services to accelerate their operations from manual to digital mode.

Gartner has predicted the nation's total tech investment will hit $111 billion in 2022, up 6.3% on the previous year's figure. IT services are expected to account for the largest proportion of the spend - $39.2 billion – as businesses shell out for consultancy services to support their digital transformation agendas.

Process automation is central to many of those agendas. Replacing inefficient, manual processes with modern, automated digital alternatives is the name of the game. The benefits of doing so include increased productivity, reduced human error and greater employee satisfaction. Historically, process automation was the exclusive remit of ICT professionals, but these user-friendly tools can be used to implement process change by anyone in the organisation. They empower non-technical employees to quickly and easily instigate and enact change – and for the organisation to begin reaping the benefits just as fast.

Map your processes
When you're embarking on a project of any description, it makes sense to understand the status quo, before seeking to enact change. In this instance, that means creating visual maps of the current state of your processes. Doing so allows you to determine whether those processes work well, or are overly complex and inefficient, or completely redundant. Start shifting things around before you've completed this step and you can be guaranteed of one outcome: chaos.

Understand the intelligent automation options
Horses for courses, as the old saying has it. There are multiple ways to intelligently automate processes – think workflow, digital forms, RPA, eSign and more to name a few. Take the time to understand the options and work with your ICT department or digital transformation consultants to choose the solutions that best meet your business requirements.

Measure your progress
Process excellence isn't all about 'the vibe'. It's about rigorously striving to optimise every aspect of your operations. That doesn't occur by accident and it's why companies that are serious about upping their game stay laser focused on the metrics. They collect performance data continually and use data analytics to transform it into actionable insights that help them improve – and keep on improving.

Optimising your processes via automation is not the finish line. Rather, it's the means to one: boosting the productivity and profitability of your enterprise as it prepares to tackle the opportunities and challenges in 2022 and beyond.
