Four cloud companies have achieved Strategic Hosting Provider certification under the Federal Government's Hosting Certification Framework. One of them, Sliced Tech, was acquired by global consultancy Deloitte on Thursday.

Announced at noon on Thursday, the companies are Vault Cloud, AUCloud (both Australian), Sliced Tech (now UK-owned) and Amazon Web Services (US) [corrected]. They have been certified for the following services:

AUCloud – Government Cloud Service offering

Amazon Web Services – Government Cloud Service offering (Australian Region)

Sliced Tech – Government Cloud Service offering

Vault Cloud – Government Cloud Service offering (Australia)

The system of certification was changed in March 2020, when the Australian Signals Directorate ceased to be the regulator for cloud providers who aspire to be certified for government services.

Thereafter, the Digital Transformation Agency and the Australian Cyber Security Agency became the two bodies involved in the certification.

Vault chief executive Rupert Taylor-Price told iTWire that the certification his company had received was conditional and Vault had given two undertakings as a result of non-compliance discovered during the assessment process.

These were:

  • Certification to ISO 28001; and
  • Non-operational management staff and Board members becoming AGSVA NV1 security cleared.

Taylor-Price said all operational staff had appropriate AGSVA clearances. An NV1 clearance is the government security clearance to handle PROTECTED and SECRET data.

As to whether a report on the non-compliant aspects would be released publicly by the DTA, Taylor-Price said: "Vault is supportive of transparency around certifications but it is not Vault's role to make any decisions about the release of any specific information. We are not advocating that other providers approve the release of their reports as there may be sensitive content in some reports."

iTWire has contacted AUCloud and Sliced Tech for comment on their making the grade and also to inquire whether there were any non-compliance issues.

Iain Rouse, director of AWS Public Sector in Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement: "AWS is pleased to be certified as Strategic Hosting Provider in the Australian Government's Hosting Certification Framework.

"We look forward to continuing to work with the Government to ensure they have access to safe, secure, and innovative cloud services.

"Since 2012, AWS has provided world-class infrastructure in Australia, including on-shore data centres to enable data sovereignty, and a full range of security protections, tools, and services to the Australian Government and our local customers."

AWS has been asked whether there were any issues of non-compliance.

Apart from the four cloud providers, the DTA also announced the following data centre facilities for hosting of government data:
