Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) provider OptiComm has announced that it is in the final stages of developing Australia’s first Ten Gigabit per Second Passive Optical Network (XGS-PON) – the next generation Passive Optical Network (PON) – allowing residential customers to access a nominal line speed of up to 1Gbps, and commercial customers to reach speeds up to 10Gbps.

Complaints about phone and Internet services decreased 4% in the last financial year ending 30 June 2020, but despite the drop residential consumers and small businesses still made 127,151 complaints to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman over the 12-months, according to the TIO’s 2019-20 annual report.

The decision by National Broadband Network operator, NBN Co to extend its Education Assistance offer until 15 January 2021, has earned the praise of communications consumers peak body ACCAN, which says the targeted offer from the company waives the wholesale costs for many services on the 25/5 Mbps speed tier - and encourages telcos to offer free or heavily discounted NBN plans to low-income households with school-aged children.
