US warns Germany, Italy to avoid using Huawei 5G gear

The US is continuing its campaign to put pressure on Europe to ban Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei Technologies from its 5G networks, with an official claiming that Huawei is part of state surveillance and complicit in human rights abuses.

The US will need to invest between US$20 billion (A$27.3 billion) and US$50 billion in new semiconductor fabrication plants if it wants to reverse the trend of the last 30 years which has seen semiconductor manufacturing decline, a study claims.
