NEC announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Blue Danube Systems, a U.S. based provider of CBRS/4G/5G RAN products and AI/ML based software solutions that help mobile operators address the challenge of 5G network buildouts and spectrum optimisation. The deal is expected to close around March of 2022, pending regulatory approval, the company said.
GUEST OPINION: 2021 saw the service provider ecosystem flourish in tough environments. Open RAN has evolved more than ever; the global 5G market has risen dramatically, creating low latency and enhanced security that give enterprises the power to implement breakthrough applications and increased AI/ML capabilities; and demand for infrastructure that powers 5G, IoT and UHD has continued to rise.
Nokia announced that it is ready to supply its O-RAN fronthaul multi-vendor solution to NTT DOCOMO's 5G network following successful testing. The move will enable the Japanese operator to further select independent combinations of hardware and software to optimise its network in the future.
Nokia announced the global launch of its latest range of AirScale 5G products covering baseband, remote radio heads, and massive MIMO active antennas with digital beamforming.

A group of academics and ex-officials who are close to the Biden camp have suggested that the US co-operate with China rather than confront Beijing in many fields and also give Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei Technologies a role in the global build of 5G networks.
With the recent entry of NEC into the UK market as a 5G RAN supplier, and Dish Network entering the US 5G market building a new network from scratch using an open RAN (O-RAN) approach, the challenges are starting to mount against closed system vertically and horizontally integrated 5G RAN providers.
Technology analyst firm Gartner has forecast that global expenditure on 5G network infrastructure will almost double this year to reach US$8.1 billion (A$11.3 billion).
