ACMA steps up fight on mobile number fraud

A new standard to mandate stronger identity verification processes before mobile numbers can be ported is being introduced in Australia as the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) steps up its fight against mobile number fraud.

Phone and Internet complaints by Australian consumers and small businesses declined in the final quarter of 2019, but there’s been a steady 1% increase in complaints when comparing July to December 2019 against the same period in the previous year.

Complaints to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman from residential consumers and small businesses rose for the financial year 2018, but were down for the last quarter, according to a report from the TIO on Wednesday.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has issued new rules providing regulatory safeguards for consumers moving to services delivered over the NBN – cautioning telcos to take immediate steps to embed the rules in their business practices.

Millions of Australians have experienced problems with their phone or Internet services over the last 12 months, prompting the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman to attack telcos and service providers for taking far too long to resolve the problems that consumers face.

Residential consumer and small business complaints against telcos continue to plague the telecommunications industry and there’s no sign of the connection problems being reduced despite industry and regulator efforts to overcome the problems.
