Australia to host global spectrum meeting

The future of communications technologies across the Asia-Pacific region will be under the microscope when the Asia Pacific Telecommunity Preparatory Group will hold an international spectrum meeting in Perth in March.

A global investment of US$450 billion in network infrastructure will be needed to connect the next 1.5 billion unconnected people worldwide, according to a report from the ITU presented to the UN Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development at the World Economic Forum currently being held in Davos, Switzerland.

ITU to promote mobile money for the poor

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has established a focus group on digital financial services to promote financial inclusion using ICT. It says the initiative is in response to a proposal from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is a member of ITU's standardisation body.
