LG develops 'world first' 4G handset modem chip

Korean electronics giant LG Electronics has developed what the company claims is the first 4G handset modem chip based on 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology standards. The chip can theoretically support wireless download speeds of 100Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps.

Although data “calls” on 21Mbps networks and equipment have been made in the labs and in demonstrations, Australia is the first place in the world where such a call has been made on a commercial, deployed 21Mbps eHSPA network, with a full commercial launch due early 2009.
