As predicted by iTWire a year ago, Telstra has announced plans to upgrade the capacity on its Melbourne-Sydney optical fibre link by quadrupling from 10Gpbs to 40Gbps the data throughput on each optical wavelength in the fibre.

Ericsson names new global CEO

Ericsson has announced the resignation, at year end, of its president and CEO of six years standing, Carl-Henric Svanberg who will become chairman of BP, the world's fourth largest company. He will be replaced by Hans Vestberg, Ericsson's CFO and an 18 year veteran of the company.

Mobile cell sites are ideal locations for weather monitoring: they can provide physical infrastructure, power and connectivity. Ericsson and mobile carriers plan to use them to increase Africa's weather monitoring stations from a mere 300 to over 5000, and Ericsson is looking to do the same thing in Asia Pacific.
