Telstra tests Nortel 40G & 100G DWDM gear

Telstra is claiming two "world records" announcing the successful completion of trials of Nortel's 40Gbps and 100Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing technology over world record distances in its long haul fibre network, but it is already planning to use Ericsson 40Gbps DWDM gear to carry commercial services between Sydney and Melbourne; gear that Ericsson claims will be upgradeable to 100Gbps as soon as the standard is finalised.

Ericsson has won the auction for Nortel's LTE and CDMA assets for $US1.13b, 74 percent above the offer from the initial bidder, Nokia Siemens Networks.

Video in all its forms has long been touted as a "killer application" for the national broadband network, but according to Ericsson the big opportunity is to exploit tight integration between video content and related services that will be made possible by open IPTV standards and the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).
