E-waste world record attempt underway

Australians are being urged to help set a new world record for the most e-waste collected for recycling to tackle the nation’s fastest growing waste problem.

A deal has been done between the federal government’s Department of Human Services and WorkVentures, whereby the government will supply laptops to the not-for-profit company to be refurbished and sold at a discount price to Centrelink concession card holders, low income earners, schools and other not-for-profit organisations.

Past meets the present at CSIRAC

Today's new world of computer science met the old recently when senior executives from the CSIRO's ICT Centre paid a visit to the University of Melbourne to see CSIRAC, Australia's first and the world's fourth programmable electronic digital computer, built in 1949 by a CSIRO team led by Dr Trevor Pearcey, after whom the Pearcey Foundation was named.
