Dramatic increase in email phishing attacks

Email mailboxes at thousands of organisations have been hit by more than 12 million spear phishing and social engineering attacks between May 2020 and June 2021, according to a new report on email security.

·      In 2020, 4,550 organisations used Barracuda Email Threat Scanner to scan 2,600,531 unique mailboxes and found 2,029,413 unique attacks.

·      On average, 512 attacks were found per organisation. 

·      14% of all mailboxes had at least one email attack detected.

·      59% of the threats detected were phishing scams.

Global quarterly spending on cyber security rose above the US$10 billion mark for the first time in the last three months of 2018, the analyst firm Canalys says, adding that, according to its estimates, the total investment in cyber security for the year touched US$37 billion, a rise of 9% year-on-year.
