TCL Communication, better known for its range of cheap television sets, has announced its first lot of self-branded smartphones, the TCL 10 series, all of which are priced under US$500. The devices will be available for sale later this year, with availability dates to be announced over the next few weeks. Two of the models will be sold in Australia.

US ropes in tech firms in bid to cut Huawei reliance

A number of American technology companies such as Microsoft, Dell and AT&T have joined an effort sponsored by the White House to create advanced software for 5G networks in order to reduce the dependence on Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei Technologies.

Telecommunications equipment vendors Nokia and Ericsson may be forced to move a good part of their operations out of China if a proposed move by the US, to make it mandatory that an 5G equipment used within the country be designed and made outside China, comes into force.
