Samsung adds Dolby Atmos to soundbar range

Dolby Atmos was the province of big screen cinema but it is creeping into home cinema and wearables as well.

Technically Dolby Atmos adds a three-dimensional spatial feel to sound – as if you are really at a concert or on set. It is “free” sound that adds depth to traditional stereo or quad channels and adds “overhead and around” dimensions. Currently, true Dolby Atmos content is limited, but later releases on Blu-ray like Mad Max and Hunger Games have it.

Samsung have released an HW-K950 soundbar with Dolby Atmos and it has 500 watts (combined), a total of 15 speakers – left, centre, right, four Atmos upwards firing, a wireless 8” subwoofer and two wireless rear speakers with Atmos. Technically it is a 5.1.4 system. It has 4K pass-through (connect a 4K Blue-ray like its UBD-K8500), Bluetooth streaming, Wireless Multi-room audio ready (Android and iOS apps), one HDMI/ARC input, two additional HDMI inputs, optical and audio inputs.

Carl Rose, vice-president, Consumer Electronics, Samsung Electronics Australia, said, “The HW-K950 offers an immersive Dolby Atmos sound experience in the home, and will challenge what Australians expect from home entertainment. By pairing it with a Samsung SUHD TV and UBD-K8500 UHD Blu-ray player, Samsung is looking to set a new standard for the premium home cinema experience.”

The HW-K950 was tuned at Samsung’s state-of-the-art audio lab in Valencia, California, ensuring a premium audio experience.

The remote lets you adjust sound for your room size and to compensate for different ceiling, wall, and window covering types that may absorb sound. It also has a range of effects - standard (original Sound), music, clear voice, sports, movie, and night as well as a basic equaliser.

The sound bar can be wall mounted and has suitable recesses for power and cable drops. The remote rear speakers have optional floor or wall mounts and only require power. The sub-woofer usually is placed on the floor and requires power.
