LAUNCH VIDEOS: Sony introduces new Ultra HD, 4K HDR 2016 TVs in Australia

By

Boasting an ‘enhanced High Dynamic Range experience’, Sony’s new backlighting technologies, ultra slim design and fantastic picture quality bode well for Sony’s 2016 TV sales.

Sony Australia has introduced its new ‘4K HDR television series designed to deliver a greater brightness range and higher contrast, making the best use of 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range) content with its unique backlighting technologies in a slim design.’

The 4K HDR TV series ranges in screen size from 55 to 85 inches.

Meanwhile, Sony says it is also expanding its ‘BRAVIA LCD television series with multiple screen size options from 32 to 55 inches.’

So, what is HDR, or High Dynamic Range?

It’s the new buzzword for 2016 that every major TV manufacturer wants you to know about.

Sony’s explanation is that HDR is ‘a burgeoning video standard that greatly expands the range of possible visual expression by reproducing higher brightness, higher contrast and more vibrant colours.’

As for content, Sony says ‘HDR compatible content and services are expected to become more and more prevalent via Internet video services, TV broadcastings and Ultra HD Blu-ray titles.’

Sony’s X9400D TV range features ‘Slim Full-Array Direct LED Backlighting,’ while the X9300D series is one that Sony says takes ‘picture quality to new heights by delivering the best quality from HDR content.’

Sony explains that the X9300D series’ new Slim Backlight Drive technology features ‘a new grid-array backlighting structure which was previously only available with full-array backlighting systems, allowing X-tended Dynamic Range PRO technology to boost peak brightness and black levels more precisely, and enhance contrast levels while maintaining a slim form factor.’

Meanwhile, a new ‘4K Processor X1 and its precision colour mapping technology allows TRILUMINOS Display to reproduce a wider colour range with accurate colour details at any brightness level.’

Sony boosts the X1 processor ‘also improves the streaming quality of 4K HDR images provided by Internet video services.’
There isn’t just the TV viewing aspect, but where you place the TV too.

Naturally, the TVs look great on a stand, but they can also be hung against a wall, but both models sit so close to the wall itself that Sony says they ‘virtually disappear into it, leaving behind little but the picture itself.’

When the television is set on a TV rack or a cabinet, its clean cable management keeps wires out of view and looks equally elegant when viewed from behind.

Plenty more specs and pricing details are below, but first, here’s five videos.

The first is Sony’s own company video. The second is my recording of the launch event, following by a comparison between Sony’s TV picture and brightness quality compared with a major OLED competitor, then a brief Android TV demo and finally, a brief cable management demo.
