The online bookseller promises the Kindle App will give customers "the best reading experience available on your tablet computer including the iPad," with "no Kindle required."
The new app will offer some of the same interface features as the iPad's iBooks, such as the ability to view your library as an array of book covers and the option to turn pages with a realistic paper-turning animation.
It also will support the same features as the existing Kindle app for the iPhone, including the Whispersync technology that keeps track of the last page you read along with notes and bookmarks and sync them among your various reading devices -- Kindle, computer, iPhone, or BlackBerry.
The syncing means you can pick up reading on one device at the place you left off on another.
The app also allows direct purchase of the more than 450,000 Kindle-compatible books in the Amazon store.
The tablet (including iPad) app will be free; no availability date was announced.
