Dating site drops 'fatties'

By
The online dating site BeautifulPeople.com, which is supposedly only open to people who fit that description, claims to have dropped 5,000 members who gained too much weight over the holidays.

Allegedly, membership in the site is only granted after the applicant's appearance has been voted on by the existing members.

"BeautifulPeople does not define beauty it simply gives an accurate representation of what society's ideal of beauty is," claims the site's About page, missing comma and all. (It's not called GrammaticalPeople.com, after all.)

The same page also boasts that the site may not be politically correct, but is honest.

In that tradition, the site's founder has told British news outlets that it has cut thousands of members for eating too much during the holiday season. "Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model," Robert Hintze told BBC News.

And managing director Greg Hodge told The Guardian, ""Every year we see that some of our members from western cultures eat and drink to excess over the holidays and clearly their looks suffer...The USA has been grossly over-indulging since Thanksgiving -- it's no wonder that so many members have been expelled from the network. We hope they will be back after shedding the festive pounds."

Supposedly, the decision about who to cut was made by the membership after viewing new photos the overindulgers had posted online. Left unexplained was why members of a site devoted to prevailing standards of beauty would post photos showing recent weight gain in the first place.
