Australian Kindle Store opens, new Fire HDX tablets arriving soon Featured

By

Amazon has stepped up its presence in Australia with the arrival of the Australian Kindle Store, a wider range of Kindle devices, and a better deal for independent local authors and publishers.

The Australian Kindle Store is customised for our market, with local best sellers, curated lists, and books from local publishers and authors.

More than two million books are offered in the Australian Kindle Store, including more than 26,000 free English-language titles. 1.4 million of the books are priced at $9.99 or less, with more than 700,000 priced at $3.99 or less.

Among the latest best-sellers highlighted by Amazon are At the Close of Play by Ricky Ponting, Eyrie by Tim Winton, and Bittersweet by Colleen McCullough.

Local publishers participating in the store include Text Publishing and Magabala Books.

"Millions of Australians are already Kindle customers, and we're delighted to make it even easier for them to enjoy the Kindle experience," said Amazon Kindle vice president Neil Lindsay.

"The new Kindle Store is customised for Australian customers, with local best sellers and curated lists relevant to Australians, and many titles from local publishers and authors such as Tim Winton, Karly Lane and Kate Morton."

Independent authors and publishers can now offer their books through the Australian Kindle Store at prices set in Australian dollars and receive up to 70% royalties. Worldwide royalties can now be paid in Australian dollars.

Amazon also announced that the Kindle Fire HD that was originally priced at $229 is available for $189 at Dick Smith and Big W stores starting today.

The Kindle range in Australia will soon expand with the arrival of the Kindle Fire HDX models announced in September.

The 7in Kindle Fire HDX arrives on 26 November, with a retail price of $329.

It will be followed on 10 December by the $479 8.9in Kindle Fire HDX.

The Kindle Paperwhite remains available at $159.

All models are or will be available at Dick Smith and Big W.
