Irish smart grid technology firm VIOTAS has set up operations in Melbourne to sell its demand response services to commercial and industrial electricity consumers in Australia.

The company's entry into Australia has been supported by the Irish Government's Enterprise Ireland agency and it will use Melbourne as a regional hub from which to expand in the Asia-Pacific region.

Founded in 2013 in Limerick in order to enable zero-carbon systems, VIOTAS' services lead to lower dependence on fossil fuels for electrictity generation.

Commercial and industrial users of VIOTAS technology can choose to reduce non-critical power loads and be paid for this in the same way that power stations earn money for generating electricity.

"Our services are underpinned by our best in class technology that is designed from the ground up to meet the challenges associated with integrating increasing amounts of renewable energy onto the power system," said Paddy Finn, co-founder, chief executive and chief technology officer of VIOTAS.

"We are a company that looks towards the future, and Australia, a country whose coat of arms symbolises moving forward, never backwards, clearly shares our view of the world.

"We are excited to deliver our services to commercial and industrial clients in Australia to help facilitate the use of more renewable energy on the wider power system in a way that retains value in the economy."

Michael Zammit, managing director, VIOTAS Australia, said" "I am truly delighted to be leading VIOTAS Australia having seen the extent of what they have achieved in Ireland.

"The technology behind our services is complex but our business model is simple; we generate significant revenue for our clients, improving their competitiveness, and retaining value in the Australian economy."
