Pandemic pushes up demand for online learning, says RMIT Online Featured

By Staff Writer

Demand for RMIT Online’s master programs has jumped during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the biggest increases for logistics and data science degrees reflecting the explosion of ‘big data’ and the movement to online purchasing away from in-store sales, while lockdowns have boosted overall demand for online learning.

According to data from RMIT Online - the online division of RMIT University - the number of enrolments for the Master of Data Science Strategy and Leadership soared 64% in the 20/21 financial year - and during the same period, enrolments for the Master of Supply Chain and Logistics Management jumped 45%, and the Master of Business Administration by 37%.

“We are seeing a huge demand for online data science postgraduate degrees as the volume of information and data available to organisations is growing exponentially and, in parallel, so is demand for skilled professionals in data science,” said Julian Stevenson, Product Director, RMIT Online.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has forced businesses to pivot to online strategy and improve their logistics practices, and we are seeing huge growth in demand for professionals with postgraduate skills in logistics and supply chain management, as well as marketing skills.

“Further study in data science, logistic, business administration, marketing or management can build professionals’ competencies as well as help to prepare them for more senior and management roles. RMIT Online master degrees also enable candidates to develop skills that have been validated by industry, while getting credentialed by a world-leading university.

“What is also striking is the positive impact of postgraduate study; as employers come to terms with huge changes brought about by technology, the growth of ‘big ‘data’ and the Covid-19 pandemic, they are paying a premium for professionals with postgraduate qualifications who can meet technological and management demands.”

The university says students undertaking an RMIT Online course gain knowledge and practical skills from renowned industry partners who are at the forefront of their field and, at the same time, RMIT Online master courses also enable candidates to balance work, study and life commitments while advancing their careers.

Dr Kevin Argus, Lecturer, Design Thinking and Marketing for RMIT Online’s MBA program, said demand for the MBA program is underpinned by its hands-on, job-ready skills and strong industry connections.

“Linking up with industry, RMIT Online knows where the skills gaps are in today’s employment market. The organisation can also forecast what the key drivers will be for the future of work. Their programs are designed to deliver work-ready skills and turn our graduates into valuable team members in the workforce,” Dr Argus said.
