Swinburne University and Imagine Room to build a studio facility in Melbourne

By

Swinburne University partners with immersive media company Imagine Room to build a studio facility in Melbourne that will carry out crucial research in virtual reality, human biometrics, performance, and assisted technology design.

Swinburne University has signed a multi-year agreement with Imagine Room to build and operate a high-end volumetric capture facility at Swinburne’s Prahran site in Melbourne, Victoria.

The facility will conduct crucial research into virtual world content production, digital human double, CX, UI/UX, and post production workflows.

The new facility, situated within Swinburne’s Centre for Transformative Media Technologies, will provide support for research into human biometrics, performance, and assisted technology design in the disability sector.

The studio will also be made available to commercial productions.

The partnership will also include a training and mentorship program for students seeking careers in immersive media, interactive arts, and virtual content production sectors.

“This is a cornerstone partnership deal for the Imagine Room businesses as it facilitates research and expands our national footprint in the volumetric and digital human space,” says Imagine Room executive chairman David Whitaker. “This will be pivotal as demand for 3D content matures. Swinburne’s vision to engage industry partners like us in this way is refreshing and deserves to be fully supported.”

Swinburne University industry research engagement and business development Ros Hore says the partnership connects the university to research and tangible outcomes that will be meaningful in physical and virtual worlds.

“Imagine Room’s existing experience, connections, passion and dedication to bringing this technology to Australia made them the obvious partner,” Hore says.

Swinburne University centre for transformative media technologies director and professor Kim Vincs concludes: “This partnership sets the agenda for research into all forms of virtual presence. We are excited to be working with Imagine Room to bring people and technology together to provide transformative solutions for industry.”
