.au market maturing: report

By

.au is one of the 10 biggest country code domains, but it is becoming a mature market.

There are now around 2.9 million domains registered in the .au namespace, more than one for every 10 Australians.

But according to a new report published by AusRegistry, the company that runs the .au registry, growth in the number of .au domains has slipped to approximately 6%, a far cry from the 30+% seen in the middle of the previous decade.

.com.au is still the most popular, accounting for 86% of .au domains, with the bulk of the remainder are in .net.au. Both of these are reserved for commercial entities.

Around 50% of new registrations are not renewed - that is, they are allowed to lapse at the end of the initial two-year period. AusRegistry officials suggest this is due to factors such as impulse purchases, failed businesses, speculation and unused domains.

Once a domain has been renewed twice (ie, it is at least six years old), the probability of renewal is greater than 80%.

Only 2% of .au domains are over 14 years old, the result of growth over the last decade and the low propensity to renew registrations after the first two years.

While short and memorable domain names are often considered more valuable, AusRegistry officials noted a tendency for .au registrants to clarity over brevity, with more than 48% of names comprising between nine and 15 characters.
