Betting agency says Netflix likely to be Apple's next buy

Betting agencies often end up being much better at predicting the outcomes of national elections and Sportsbet has taken this to a different plane, offering odds that Netflix will be the next company Apple chooses to buy.

Speculation has been rife about what Apple will do with its US$256 billion cash pile after the amount was made public when the technology giant announced its second-quarter results on Tuesday.

A day before that, The Wall Street Journal provided a graphic allowing readers the opportunity to choose what they would buy with such a stash. The market value of various likely takeover targets was listed and one could choose what to buy.

Given the huge amount of cash available, iTWire found that Apple could buy Time, Cirrus Logic, Lions Gate Entertainment, Twitter, Viacom, Skyworks, Pegatron, Toshiba's Memory Chip business, Snap, and Ford, and still have US$34 billion left over.

Sportsbet has offered odds of 2.75 that Apple will acquire Netflix next. And, given that Apple has shown an interest in self-driving cars, Tesla has the next best odds at 4.00.

Apple's cash stash.

Disney seems an unlikely takeover target but Sportsbet has it as third choice, at odds of 6.00.

The most unlikely choice on offer is an Apple takeover of Microsoft.

The odds offered on other companies being acquired are as under:

  • $6.00 Disney
  • $10 Pandora
  • $11 Adobe
  • $13 Twitter
  • $15 21st Century Fox
  • $15 Activision Blizzard
  • $17 Spotify
  • $21 Time Warner
  • $21 Nokia
  • $26 General Motors
  • $26 Ford
  • $26 Fiat Chrysler
  • $34 Amazon
  • $41 Google
  • $81 Sony
  • $81 Samsung
  • $101 Facebook
  • $101 Microsoft
