The PNY XLR8 Gaming 16GB RAM kit kicks the competition - and looks good doing it

By

One of the most impactful upgrades you can make to your computer is upgrading its RAM. And what better RAM upgrade than PNY’s XLR8 Gaming DDR4 16GB kit which not only delivers 3600MHz speed but RGB lighting too?

A great gamer deserves great RAM, and great RAM deserves to be seen. The XLR8 Gaming 16GB RAM kit brings, as you might expect, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, split across two 8GB RAM modules. However, it’s also RGB-lit RAM that is compatible with a host of lighting options including EPIC-X RGB, RGB Fusion, ASUS Aura Sync, ASRock polychrome sync, and MSI RGB mystic light sync. You can thus easily incorporate the RAM lighting into your existing RGB setup.

iTWire tried the RAM out and found it, indeed, epic. Installation was a snap (and there's a guide at PNY's website) and it looked brilliant when all lit up. iTWire recalls a previous discussion with eSports champions who said they could "feel" high-performance RAM; everything ran smoother, it felt better. Sure enough, this was iTWire's experience also; the computer started up responsively, apps opened and closed, games loaded and ran and all with buttery smoothness with the RAM always responsive, always ahead of every request.

Experience is one thing; hard numbers tell the story behind them: spec-wise, the RAM is dual-channel 1.35V RAM with a clock speed of 3600MHz and Column Address Strobe (CAS) latency of 18. CAS is the delay in clock cycles between the READ command and the moment data is available, measured in nanoseconds. CAS latency typically increases as clock speed increases, and with DDR4 RAM starting at 2133MHz, this XLR8 Gaming RAM’s speed of 3600MHz is right up the top, with a thumping transfer rate of 28,800MB per second. This is high-speed RAM, and RAM speed has a direct relationship to your frames per second and how smoothly and how performant your computer and games run.

Of course, you need a compatible motherboard, and you might even be mixing with other RAM. This kit is compatible with 3600MHz, 3200MHz, 3000MHz, 2933MHz, 2800MHz, 2666MHz, 2400MHz, and 2133MHz options.

On the other hand, you might want to extract even more performance. Well, PNY has you sorted there too; this 16GB RAM kit has Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) 2.0 support allowing you to run the memory at overclocked speeds, provided your computer’s BIOS supports XMP and you turn it on, within the BIOS’ memory settings.

There's a lot to love here, and PNY provides a lifetime warranty and installation guides on its website. The modules come with high-performance aluminium heat spreaders to keep themselves cool despite the action.

Your PC deserves unparalleled performance and radiant RGB. You can find it available from various retailers. The RRP is $US 77.99. PNY provides other options at different speeds and in different capacities, including 32GB and up to 4400MHz.
