Samsung Galaxy Book and Galaxy Tab S3 – first look Featured

By

Samsung has launched its new Galaxy Book, a 10.6” or 12” Windows 10, two-in-one, and the Galaxy Tab S3, a 9.7” Android tablet. All use the new S Pen stylus.

Media and analysists were given a hands-on session with all three but it is too early to draw any definitive conclusions – particularly way too early to make comparisons with other two-in-ones a.k.a. Microsoft Surface Pro because what was clear is that Samsung is setting its own agenda.

That is to extend the Samsung eco-system with things that matter to its users. It can do that when it commands the lion’s share of market share of every market it is in.

SS GT3 flowFor example, there is a high degree of integration between its Galaxy handsets and its Windows and Android tablets via Samsung Flow including notification sync, auto-hotspot link, and handover of files, contacts, email, calendar and more from handset to tablet and vice versa. Flow is only available in the Samsung ecosystem.

Richard Fink, vice-president, IT and Mobile Division, said, "Samsung believes in premium experiences and choice, and the Galaxy Book and Tab S3 give Australians the ability to choose the tablet that suits their needs and stay connected with a 4G offering. Whether it’s the Galaxy Book 12-inch productivity powerhouse with a keyboard and S Pen, or a beautifully crafted and sleek Tab S3 engineered for premium entertainment experiences, our new range offers a great solution for a variety of users, from busy professionals on-the-go to people relaxing whilst streaming content at home."

Add to that other Samsung things like:

  • DeX (Desktop eXtension) that offers a full Android desktop replete with DeX enabled Microsoft Office apps and more, external screen, mouse and keyboard.
  • Bixby voice assistant (not here yet) but way more than a voice activated search.
  • Samsung Connect (smart home control).
  • Samsung Health (one of the best health tracking apps and it only works with its Galaxy and Gear Fit 2 and Gear S2/3).
  • Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass (fast becoming a ubiquitous e-payment and identity authentication system).
  • and the Samsung Switch (to effortlessly set up a new Galaxy from almost any other brand smartphone including iPhone and bringing over iTunes).

There are many more exclusive Samsung Galaxy apps and all designed to enhance the stock Android experience and to build a Samsung “home” of connected appliances and more.

What we know – before a thorough review.

Customers who pre-order the Galaxy Book before 12 September will receive a complimentary Staedtler Pen and Samsung Multiport adapter valued at RRP $198. This offer will be available via Samsung and participating partners.

The S Pen is a passive (no battery) and is powered via screen induction – electromagnetic resonance technology (think of wireless charging) and has gesture (Air View/Command or hover) and drawing. It is a 4096-pressure level, 2B tip size (.7mm) and it is a nice, responsive tool to use – very much mimicking pencil on paper.

Samsng GB StaedtlerA nice touch was the optional STAEDTLER Noris digital “pencil” stylus in its familiar yellow and black, red tipped pencil shape. Wacom provided the technology.
