The Cloud@Customer concept is to provide customers with a private cloud built from the same hardware and software stack used by Oracle Cloud, located in the customer's data centre, managed by Oracle, and charged on a subscription basis.
At the time of Oracle Open World 2016, the services available were Infrastructure Cloud Machine@Customer, Exadata Cloud Machine@Customer, and Big Data Cloud Machine@Customer.
Now, thanks to Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer, all Oracle Cloud public services and applications are available on subscription for in-house deployment under Oracle management.
With prices starting at US$500,000 a month – "a small fraction of what customers would have to pay for a one-off region from other cloud providers" – Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer does what its name suggests. Customers get a private Oracle Cloud region with "100% of Oracle's public cloud services" in their own data centre.
That includes Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP, HCM, SCM, and CX applications, as well as services such as Bare Metal Compute, VMs and GPUs, Exadata Cloud Service, Container Engine for Kubernetes, and the Data Flow analytics service.
This makes it ideal for customers that cannot put all of their workloads into the public cloud, whether that's for performance (latency), data sovereignty, or compliance reasons, Oracle Cloud senior vice president Steve Daheb told iTWire.
In contrast with the way Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer provides the complete set of Oracle services, AWS Outposts only provide a handful of AWS services, he said.
Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer comes with the same SLA and the same pay-per-use model (albeit with a substantial minimum charge) as Oracle Cloud, he added.
"Many customers are expressing interest," Daheb told iTWire.
Among the first to adopt Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer are Japan-based consultancy and solutions provider Nomura Research Institute (where it will host Nomura's SaaS applications that are used by 70% of capital markets firms in Japan), and the Government of Oman's Oman Information and Communications Technology Group.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure executive vice president of engineering Clay Magouyrk said "Enterprise customers have told us that they want the full experience of a public cloud on-premises, including access to all of Oracle's cloud services, to run their most important workloads.
"With Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer, enterprises get all of our second-generation cloud services, including Autonomous Database, in their data centers. Our major competitors can't offer customers a comparable dedicated cloud region running on-premises."
Oracle also announced the availability of Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer as a standalone offering or as part of Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer.
Oracle Autonomous Database was launched in 2018. Oracle CTO and chairman Larry Ellison told customers "We guarantee to cut your Amazon bill in half" if they moved databases from AWS database management services to Oracle Autonomous Database running on Oracle Cloud.
Automated features include provisioning, scaling, tuning, security, fault tolerance, and back-up and recovery, which contribute to 99.995% availability.
Like its regular Oracle Cloud counterpart, Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer is charged on a pay-per-use basis, starting at around US$11,000 a month.
"Exadata Cloud@Customer has been successfully deployed at hundreds of customers, including large financial services companies, telecoms, healthcare providers, insurers, and pharmaceutical companies worldwide to modernise their infrastructure and lower costs by up to 50%," said Oracle executive vice president of mission-critical database technologies Juan Loaiza.
"We are now bringing Oracle Autonomous Database to customer data centres – freeing DBAs and developers from mundane maintenance tasks and enabling them to innovate and create more business value."
Oracle Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer is said to be suitable for multiple data types and workloads including machine learning, JSON, graph, spatial, IOT and in-memory, avoiding the need for multiple special-purpose databases.
According to the company, Oracle Autonomous Database on Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer supports up to 7x larger databases, 12x more SQL IOPS, 10x more SQL throughput, and 98% lower SQL latency than RDS on AWS Outposts.
It also reduces customers' infrastructure and database management by up to 90% because they can concentrate on schemas and data while Oracle takes care of running the underlying database infrastructure.
Exadata Cloud@Customer enhancements announced alongside Oracle Autonomous Database on Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer include support for Optane DC persistent memory and 100Gb RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) for significant performance improvements, multiple VM clusters per Exadata rack (eg, so production and dev/test can share an Exadata system), and PCI-DSS certification.
In addition, Oracle's Siebel, PeopleSoft, and JD Edwards applications are now certified to run on Oracle Autonomous Database, while the autonomously managed high availability and disaster recovery system Oracle Autonomous
Data Guard provides near zero RPO and RTO in the event of catastrophic failures.
