Oracle expands PaaS portfolio


Database and applications giant Oracle has broadened its Oracle Cloud Platform with the announcement - in some cases reannouncement - of several new services.

Last September, Oracle announced it would expand the Oracle Cloud Platform with half a dozen additional services, namely Oracle Big Data Cloud, Oracle Mobile Cloud, Oracle Integration Cloud, Oracle Process Cloud, Oracle Node.js Cloud, and Oracle Java SE Cloud.

Overnight, the company announced that some of those services - and more - are now available.

Among the newly announced services are Oracle Database Cloud - Exadata, Oracle Archive Storage Cloud, and Oracle Big Data SQL Cloud.

Oracle Database Cloud - Exadata provides cloud databases that are "100% compatible" with on-premises Exadata deployments, whether for cloud migrations or as part of a hybrid cloud strategy.

Oracle Archive Storage Cloud provides long-term data storage "at the lowest price in the industry," Oracle claimed. It is said to be suitable for infrequently accessed large-scale data sets, such as corporate financial records, medical and pharmaceutical archives, cultural preservation content, insurance records and digital film masters. The service includes integration with Oracle and third-party backup, archival and preservation software, and can be used as an additional tier for on-premises Oracle storage systems, including ZS Series, FS Series and Oracle StorageTek tape solutions.

"Symantec's goal is to allow customers to leverage the cloud as easily as they manage their on-premises infrastructure," said Symantec senior vice president and CTO of the Veritas business Pablo Stern. "Our NetBackup and Enterprise Vault customers in particular are looking to leverage the cloud for flexible, cost-effective data storage. By integrating NetBackup and Enterprise Vault with the Oracle Archive Storage Cloud Service, we are providing customers seamless, secure, on-demand access to enterprise-grade cloud storage."

Oracle Big Data SQL Cloud joins Oracle Big Data Cloud Service to provide users with a comprehensive big data management system including Hadoop, NoSQL and SQL.

Previously announced services that are now available include Oracle Integration Cloud Service (pictured above; provides integration between the cloud and on-premises Oracle and third-party applications), Oracle Mobile Cloud (to help with the rapid development and deployment of mobile apps integrated with the company's enterprise-grade backend cloud infrastructure), and Oracle Process Cloud (to allow business users to innovate and deliver process applications independent of IT, including the development of mobile workflows, automated processes, and the customisation of SaaS applications).

According to the company, Oracle Cloud Platform attracted more than 1,400 new customers during the last quarter, taking the total to more than 1,800.

Oracle Cloud now supports more than 70 million users and more than 33 billion transactions a day from 19 data centres around the world, including one in Sydney. That's a substantial increase on the 62 million users and 23 billion transactions reported last September.

"Oracle is growing really fast. We sold $US426 million worth of business in SaaS and PaaS last quarter, a 200% increase over the same quarter last year. That's an industry record, no company has ever sold that much in just one quarter," said executive chairman and CTO Larry Ellison.

"Oracle is the only company on the planet that can deliver a complete, integrated, standards-based suite of services at every layer of the cloud. Those technology advantages enable us to be much more cost-effective than our competitors. Our new Archive Storage service goes head-to-head with Amazon Glacier and it's one-tenth their price."
