Parallels adds to cloud services catalogue

Parallels is still most widely known for its virtualisation software, but its software for cloud providers is growing in importance. The company has announced several new products and services for that sector.

According to IDC figures, Parallels has 5000 partners or customers (hosting providers, resellers, and integrators) in the SMB cloud market, and - with its Plesk product - a 50% share of the control panel segment.

The company has released three new products and services, including a new version of Plesk.

Plesk 11 is billed as "the most complete panel solution for web hosting" and includes a mobile management client, business intelligence (for providers), and integration with Microsoft WebMatrix, business metrics, WebStar and SEO indicators "to help SMBs maximise their web presence and social media effectiveness."

Parallels Automation for Hosted PBX allows hosting companies to offer PBX services using in-house BroadWorks implementations or wholesale services from Apptix, Alteva and Sipcom.

Parallels Plesk Automation provides hosting providers with a way to scale their business through centralised management of customers and servers.

Parallels and Microsoft have issued a new reference architecture for providing cloud services to healthcare institutions. Based on Parallels Automation running over Hyper-V infrastructure, the architecture is issued as part of the companies' Health Community Cloud Automation partnership.

Parallels officials also noted the growing support for the Application Packaging Standard (APS), while makes it easy for hosting providers to offer additional applications and services from other companies to their user base.

Examples of such applications and services include BroadSoft BroadWorks, Google Apps for Business, McAfee Security-as-a-Service, Microsoft cloud services including Office 365, MozyPro,, and VMware Zimbra.

Venture capital fund Runa Capital and Parallels have announced a cooperative investment program "to stimulate and support the development of next-generation cloud and other hosted applications and services" by co-investing in vendors who certify and package their software as APS compliant.
