More Apple iCloudiness: mobile and desktop apps updated

By

Apple has updated the iOS versions of two of its iWork applications to work with iCloud. iWork for Mac remains unchanged, but iPhoto and Aperture get an iCloud makeover - and more.

Along with iOS 5, OS X Lion 10.7.2, and iTunes 10.5, Apple has released updates to the Numbers and Pages apps for iOS. On the OS X side, iPhoto and Aperture have been given a refresh that includes iCloud compatibility.

The idea of Documents in the Cloud is that the current versions of documents automatically appear on all of a user's Apple devices.

Numbers 1.5 for iOS allows the storage of spreadsheets in iCloud, from where they can be downloaded to a Mac or other computer as Numbers '09, Excel or PDF files. In the reverse direction, Numbers '09, Excel and CSV files can be uploaded to icloud.com for use in Numbers on an iOS device.

Other changes include user interface improvements, Merge Cells for formatting tables, and better support for the import and export of spreadsheets with hidden rows and columns.

Similarly, Pages 1.5 can access iCloud documents, with export to Pages '09, Word or PDF, and import of Pages '09. Word or plain text documents.

The updates to Numbers and Pages both include fixes for security issues.

What about the Mac? See page 2.

As yet there's no indication of when we can expect updates to the Mac versions of Numbers and Pages, or if users will always have to manually upload and download documents via iCloud's web interface.

iCloud's Photo Stream feature automatically syncs the most recently taken or imported photos between devices.

iPhoto 9.2 - the latest update for iPhoto '11 - delivers iCloud and iOS compatibility. Other improvements include support for left and right swipes to navigate in Magnify view, better delineation of previously imported photos during the import process, and the preservation of saved slideshows and books when rebuilding the library.

Version 3.2 of Apple's upmarket photo application Aperture provides compatibility with iCloud and iOS 5. In addition, a number of bugs have been fixed and improvements made in various areas of the program.

Gesture support is expanded in the Viewer, with a pinch now activating Zoom mode, and left and right swipes moving between photos. Aperture now allows the selection of Outlook as the application for emailing photos, and the correct colour profile should be displayed on externally edited photos. Various other issues have been fixed.

The OS X application updates are available via Software Update or the Support Downloads page. Updated iOS apps are available via the App Store.
