Australian HR startup reaches finals of Amazon contest

A Sydney-based company has reached the finals of the 2011 Amazon Web Services Start-Up Challenge. Deputy.com has already won $10,000 worth of AWS credits, and is in the running for a $US100,000 grand prize.

Sydney-based Deputy.com offers a set of cloud-based HR applications aimed at building engagement, culture, and business growth. The company is the sole finalist from the Asia Pacific region in the fifth Amazon Web Services Start-Up Challenge, and has already won won $10,000 worth of AWS credits plus a trip to Silicon Valley for the finals.

The seven finalists are competing for a first prize of $US50,000 cash and $US50,000 in AWS credits.

"Making it to the AWS Start-Up Challenge Grand Finale is testament to the tremendous amount of hard work Deputy.com's team has put in to building this business over the past three years," said  Deputy.com COO Robb Snell.

"AWS has been instrumental to making Deputy.com a world-class product in a short timeframe with a relatively small team. Services like Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon SimpleDB have enabled us to quickly develop complex features on a simple foundation. Amazon's variable pricing has also enabled us to offer a similar pricing model to our customers where we only charge for exactly what the customer uses. There are no terms, no contracts and nothing to lock the customer down."

The other finalists are Booshaka (US) Fantasy Shopper (UK), Flixlab (US), Getaround (US), Intervention Insights (US), and Localytics (US).
