Global 5G network infrastructure revenue to hit US$19.1 billion in 2021: Gartner

By

Global research and advisory firm Gartner forecast that 5G network infrastructure revenue will reach US$19.1 billion in 2021, representing an increase of 39% from US$13.7 billion in 2020. It also predicts that more CSPs will be providing 5G services in the future.

Worldwide 5G network infrastructure revenue will total US$19.1 billion in 2021, up by 39% from US$13.7 billion in 2020, according to the forecast by Gartner.

The forecast notes that 5G overtook LTE investment for the first time.

Gartner says communications service providers (CSPs) in mature markets ramped 5G development in 2020 and 2021 with 5G representing 39% of total wireless infrastructure revenue this year.

“The COVID-19 pandemic spiked demand for optimised and ultrafast broadband connectivity to support work-from-home and bandwidth-hungry applications, such as streaming video, online gaming, and social media applications,” explains Gartner senior principal research analyst Michael Porowski.

According to the figures provided, 5G is the fastest growing segment in the wireless network infrastructure market. Gartner predicts that the one only significant opportunity for investment growth is in 5G.

However, it noted investment in legacy wireless generations is “rapidly deteriorating” across all regions, and spending on non-5G small cells is poised to decline as CSPs move to 5G cells.

Investment in legacy wireless generations is rapidly deteriorating across all regions and spending on non-5G small cells is poised to decline as CSPs move to 5G small cells.

CSPs in North America take the largest slice of the pie. Gartner identified North America as a 5G growth market this year, and is set to grow 5G revenue from US$2.9 billion in 2020 to US$4.3 billion in 2021. The growth is due to increased adoption of dynamic spectrum sharing and millimetre wave base stations.

5G revenue in Western Europe is sluggish. Gartner forecasts that 5G revenue in the region will only hit US$1.6 billion this year, up from US$794 million in 2020.

Greater China is expected to maintain its top spot in global 5G revenue. Leading the pack, Gartner predicts that its 5G revenue will reach US$9.1 billion in 2021, up from US$7.4 billion in 2020.

Only 10% of CSPs provided commercial 5G services in 2020, which could achieve multiregional availability, Gartner says.

Gartner estimates this will jump to 60% by 2024, which is a similar rate of adoption for LTE and 4G in the past.
