Satellite industry groups join hands to push adoption

By

Six satellite industry associations have set up the Global Satellite Coalition to function as an international group through which targeted initiatives will be co-ordinated and implemented with support from hundreds of member companies.

The six associations are: Abrasat (Brazil); APSCC (Asia Pacific); CASBAA (Asia Pacific); EMEA Satellite Operators Association (Europe, Middle East, Africa, CIS); Global VSAT Forum (World); and Satellite Industry Association (US).

David Hartshorn, secretary-general of Global VSAT Forum, said: “Following the success of satellite industry collaboration for WRC15, the GSC presents a natural next step to further strengthen the satellite communications sector."

A statement said the GSC would create awareness and understanding of satellite industry innovations and their implications for spectrum and regulatory policy-making and market development.

The GSC’s priority will be to push the role of satellites in achieving complete connectivity from contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the Broadband Commission’s connectivity objectives to realising the Network of Networks required for 5G.

In addition, it will work on ensuring satellite services are an essential element of national broadband strategies, universal service programmes and disaster preparedness efforts.
