Cloud alliance tackles big data

The Open Data Centre Alliance (ODCA) - formed of major end user organisations with a combined annual IT spend of $100 billion plus - which is focussed on the creation of standards for cloud computing and data centres, has turned its attention to big data.

National Australia Bank is one of the founding members of the organisation (which was conceived by Intel) along with giants such as BMW, China Life, Deutsche Bank, Lockheed Martin and Shell.  A key part of ODCA's charter is to develop standards to help avoid vendor lock out, and ensure data can be easily transported and accessed regardless of where it is located.

Citing statistics which suggest enterprises will have to manage almost seven times the amount of data they currently handle within just five years, the ODCA has set up a Data Services Workgroup which will focus initially on big data.

It will create models for collection, management and analysis of big data - and focus on allowing interoperability between data frameworks and business intelligence systems. The first release of these models is expected later this year.

Big data specialists Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR Technologies, have all joined the ODCA and will work with end users and other vendors such as Teradata and SAS on the big data challenge.

Denis Curran, head of strategy and innovation at NAB, and a member of the ODCA's Steering Committee, said in a media release issued by ODCA that; 'With the huge opportunity of big data extending across geographies and industries, the ODCA's work will help drive interoperable standards that enhance big data frameworks to be cloud ready - from manageability to security. This will benefit ODCA's members by accelerating solution delivery.'
