Citrix releases XenApp and XenDesktop 7.7, announces 7.8

By

Citrix has made new versions of its application and desktop virtualisation software available for download, and at the same time announced what's coming later this quarter in the next versions.

XenApp and XenDesktop 7.7 feature improved integration with Microsoft technologies, among other features.

The 7.7 RealTime Optimization Pack enables a native-equivalent Skype for Business user experience within a virtual app or desktop, while virtual desktops can be rapidly provisioned in Microsoft Azure via Machine Creation Services.

Other provisioning-related improvements include support for Nvidia Grid GPU performance enhancements on vSphere, FIPS compliant communication, in-place upgrades of target device software, support for modern pre-boot environments, extended license grace period, and enhanced APIs.

Multi zone management means one XenApp site can spans multiple locations, streamlining multi-site management by allowing apps to be published from one console to all zones.

Application management and monitoring have been improved with the ability to limit the number of resource-intensive applications running on a single server in order to preserve scalability and performance, and administrators can be alerted to error conditions or excessive usage before they impact the entire deployment.

Looking ahead to XenApp and XenDesktop 7.8, that release will allow apps to be layered on top of a mast OS image, allow the management of Microsoft App-V packages, make it easier to publish apps to delivery groups, improve graphics acceleration on Windows 7 and 8 virtual desktops, and improve CPU, memory and network bandwidth efficiency.
