US communications provider CenturyLink has chosen Singapore for its eighth global security operations centre in order to offer Asian customers protection from security threats.

The company, which offers network-based security solutions, said in a statement its SOCs monitored more than 114 billion NetFlow sessions each day, which enabled it to respond to, and mitigate, about 120 DDoS attacks every 24 hours.

CenturyLink said it tracked about 5000 command and control centres and removed about 35 each month to protect Internet users.

“Our goal at CenturyLink is to make security simple for today’s digital businesses,” said Chris Betz, the company's chief security officer.

“By embedding security into the network, customers have access to secure networking solutions powered by our expansive view of the global threat landscape and our proactive approach to mitigating threats on the global internet, without the need to manage additional add-on services.”

Simon Piff, vice-president for IT security practice business at IDC Asia Pacific, said: “Asia Pacific organisations are facing an ever-evolving threat landscape, where the complexity of networks is changing, with businesses leveraging hybrid cloud environments to digitally transform.

"Organisations need to consider a ‘build vs buy’ model to sustain the necessary level of threat intelligence and advanced analytics capabilities along with the skills to interpret and act on findings.

"They will also need to undertake a holistic, enterprise-wide security posture that is proactive and predictive to combat threats and secure their business data."
