VIDEO Interview: Crestron's Ryan Gomes talks hybrid workplace tech in 2022 as 'post-COVID' not yet a reality

By

GUEST INTERVIEW: Once a customer of Crestron, Ryan Gomes' experience in AV makes him an ideal evangelist for the company's outstanding technologies, now more important than ever in a world where remote, hybrid and in-office are still realities for us all.

Crestron. Founded in 1972 and now 50 years old, Crestron is impressively still a privately held company that continues carving the path for technological innovation.

With workplace technology more essential than ever in the modern hybrid workplace and learning space, and humanity certainly living through the most transformational times ever seen, which still prevent us from being able to say "post-COVID" no matter how much we want to, the right technologies by your side can make all the difference.

I've said it before, but just imagine if the pandemic took place in the mid-80s, when Commodore 64's, MS-DOS, 286 and 386-powered PCs reigned supreme, with the modern Internet just a twinkle in Al Gore's eye and video conferencing the stuff of science fiction movies, let alone dial-up being any faster than the 300bps, 1200bps and even 9600bps modems that were around at the time, and the world would have gone through a very, very different pandemic lockdown experience.

However, with Crestron, it's clear that you're not buying a webcam to bolt on top of your TV or monitor. Instead, its customers are investing in scalable, customisable, top-of-the-line solutions, with 24/7 global service and support, and you're even sponsoring products that are designed and manufactured in America - itself a rarity in the modern world these days.

iTWire has been covering Crestron for years, but in October last year, we conducted a video interview with Max Davies, the company's Director of UC and Enterprise, which you can read about and see here.

We also published two articles late last year, with the first titled "It's time to plan your hybrid work strategy" and the second titled: "It's time to prepare your office for hybrid conferencing experiences."

With all that as a backdrop, it was great to meet Ryan Gomes, the new Regional Sales Manager of Workplace Technology at Crestron ANZ, and to learn from his perspective as someone with a great deal of pre-Crestron experience helping enterprise and government clients deal with changing needs during the pandemic.

So, my video interview with Ryan Gomes is below, after which is a summary of the topics we spoke about, so please watch and read on!

  • I started by introducing Ryan and welcoming him to the program, after which I acknowledged my previous interview with Max Davies, and asked Ryan to explain Crestron to the audience and what has changed over the last six months since talking to Max.

  • We then moved on to Ryan's experiences in the world of tech pre-Crestron, and how this has helped him in his new role, and why he decided to continue his journey and career with Crestron.

  • Ryan shared what hybrid working and workplace transformation will look like in the second half of 2022, now that COVID seems to be easing up (but is still with us).

  • I asked Ryan - has all this change really made us more productive? What else do people really need in their collaboration environments in the office or remotely to drive happy, productive, and effective workplace experiences?

  • Naturally all of this accelerated transformation has been the silver lining to the stormy clouds of COVID, but have there been any lessons in 2022 thus far that go above and beyond lessons learned in 2020 and 2021?

  • Ryan shared which are the most popular of Crestron's products and services today, and shared things that customers have surprised Crestron with in ways they have used the technology in ways not necessarily anticipated.

  • I then asked Ryan to share memories of his first remote working experiences, memories of his first computer, thoughts on the VR and AR-enabled metaverse to come in the 2030s, great advice he has received in life, and his final message to viewers, readers and Crestron's current and future customers and partners.

So, please watch the video interview with Ryan Gomes above to learn more!
