EMC expands Isilon Data Lake family

Forthcoming changes to EMC's Isilon Scale-out NAS Data Lake family include support for public cloud storage.

EMC's next-generation Isilon Scale-out NAS Data Lake products will ship next year, the company announced overnight.

Three products have been announced: IsilonSD Edge, a new version of Isilon OneFS, and CloudPools.

The purpose of the IsilonSD Edge software is to extend data lakes from the data centre to remote offices and other edge locations. It supports the OneFS data services and protocols, and allows up to 36TB of local data to be replicated between the local site and the main data centre.

IsilonSD Edge can be managed via VMware vCenter.

The updated Isilon OneFS operating system promises improved resiliency, simplified management, increased efficiency and the continuous operation of massive data lakes including enhanced support for non-disruptive upgrades.

Other changes include flexible software upgrade rollback capabilities allowing application or end-user environments to be restored to their pre-upgrade states as required.

The new CloudPools software gives Isilon a cloud storage tier, providing native connectivity to Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Virtustream. Data is encrypted in transit and compressed.

CloudPools also enables data centre expansion to EMC Elastic Cloud Storage and Isilon as a private cloud.

"The rapid growth of unstructured data in the data centre core and at the enterprise edge is challenging organisations to both manage data growth and find new ways to tap highly distributed data stores for business intelligence and value," said EMC emerging technologies division president CJ Desai.

"At the same time, the pressure is still on to keep costs down. This trio of new EMC Isilon solutions is designed to optimise every part of the data centre, provide a seamless user experience and create new economics as customers continue to wrangle mountains of data and evolve their big data strategies."

EMC emerging technologies division APAC CTO for Isilon said "With Gartner predicting the number of connected devices will grow six-fold by 2020, we see not just a growth in file sizes but also a huge growth in file quantity putting enormous pressure on existing storage systems.

"Australian organisations need to manage this growth, and increasingly to directly catalogue and analyse ever-expanding amounts of data.

"Expanding our innovative multi-protocol data lake to now incorporate the needs of the modern enterprise from edge to core to cloud enables businesses to manage their growing data stores with cost-efficient tiering, archiving and continuous non-disruptive operations whilst retaining the ability to quickly access data on demand. As it becomes more difficult to predict how much storage an organisation will need over a three to five year period, the EMC Data Lake 2.0 provides elastic flexibility to keep up with the new connected universe."
