Seagate's new 8TB Enterprise Capacity, Enterprise NAS and Kinetic hard drives each address the requirements of particular workloads.
The Enterprise Capacity 3.5 drive is aimed at cloud and enterprise customers that need to combine high capacity and reliability.
Its random read/write performance is said to be twice that of previous generations of hard drives.
As the name suggests, it is designed for use in NAS devices. But contrary to the name, it is aimed at small and medium businesses as well as enterprises.
The Kinetic drive is designed for scale-out storage. Unlike most drives, it has an Ethernet interface allowing storage applications to talk directly to the drive, doing away with the need for storage servers. Seagate says this can reduce the total cost of storage by up to 70%.
The new 8TB model provides more storage in a given space.
"I am impressed by the disk capacity increase achieved by Seagate," said Dirk Duellmann, CERN's data and storage services group deputy leader.
"As part of our collaboration through CERN openlab, we are aiming to demonstrate with Seagate the expected TCO and scalability benefits of Kinetic drives. These tests are being performed within the 100PB-scale storage setups that CERN deploys for the Large Hadron Collider."
