Open source company SUSE has taken a pot-shot at cloud infrastructure and business mobility vendor VMware, contrasting the latter's proprietary, closed-source offering with the OpenStack Cloud that it sells.

A blog post by Ryan Hagen, consulting manager, Global SUSE Services, said that VMware owned the virtualisation market and had used its dominance "to proliferate into other parts of the data centre and create a very sticky situation that you have no way to escape".

He said customers of VMware would have no option but to keep paying licence fees year after year, adding that the company often included new technologies as part of a contract renewal, counting on being re-hired.

"You have spent years and possibly decades in building out your data centre with the sprawling nature of VMware," Hagen said.

{laodposition sam08}"Implementing SUSE OpenStack Cloud means you continue to leverage your current assets, complementing them with an infrastructure that will prepare you or the future."

He cited what he claimed were the "value points" of using SUSE OpenStack Cloud:

  • "Freedom – You can choose the hypervisor flavour that you want or you already have including KVM, VMware, and Xen, along with bare metal provisioning;
  • "Speed – Accelerate the delivery of crucial applications that are very important in today’s market;
  • "Integration – The broadest set of hardware certifications that allow you to utilise current assets;
  • "Control – Monitor, manage, and optimise your cloud utilising SUSE OpenStack Cloud monitoring; and
  • "Automation – Advanced HA for critical cloud services and automated data back-up and recovery helps you avoid unplanned downtime."

Hagen ended his post with this: "Break free of that VMware grasp with proven open source solutions from the leader in open source. We invite you to check out the leader in open source – SUSE."

VMware has been contacted for its take on Hagen's post. The company is headed by a former head of open source at Intel, Dirk Hohndel.

Update: A WMware spokesperson said the company had no response to the SUSE statement.
