F5 bigs it up with BIG-IP 4200v

By

Application delivery networking specialist F5 Networks has introduced the BIG-IP 4200v, a hardware platform that can be used to consolidate multiple services.

The BIG-IP 4200v delivers an "industry leading" 850,000 layer 7 requests per second, providing an application delivery networking (ADN) system that can handle the traffic management, security, and optimisation needs of mid-sized enterprises.

Company officials claimed the ability to process more requests per second at the application layer enables the 4200v to make intelligent decisions based on business policies, such as inspecting application payloads and removing confidential information.

The 4200v provides 9000 SSL TPS for 2K keys and 8 Gbps of bulk SSL throughput performance, sufficient to allow the encryption of all types of data transfers without sacrificing overall performance, and allowing the offloading of related CPU-intensive tasks from application servers.

Support for hardware-based compression reduces the amount of data flowing across network links while reducing server load.

Officials claimed the 4200v has twice the compression throughput of its closest competitor.

Although the term 'green IT' seems to have slipped out of fashion, power consumption is often a critical issue for data centre managers.

The 4200v uses 80 PLUS Gold certified high efficiency power supplies, and delivers three times the performance per watt of its nearest competitor, F5 officials claimed.

"With F5's versatile application delivery controllers, customers can perform a growing number of valuable IT functions in the network," said Jason Needham, F5's VP of core traffic management and cloud solutions.

"The 4200v is a purpose-built hardware device with the processing power to support multiple application delivery services, offload SSL processing, and efficiently scale on a unified solution platform.

"With competitors, organisations would need to deploy multiple point products to add ADN services, further increasing infrastructure complexity and costs."
