"Ransomware is one of the most pressing enterprise issues. The most conservative estimates put global ransomware losses upward of $20 billion in 20201. These attacks increasingly target Kubernetes users since container adoption has become a prerequisite for IT modernisation and digital transformation," said Kasten by Veeam president and general manager Niraj Tolia.
"Malicious actors know that rapid development, gaps in install, and ongoing backup and operations issues can be easy threat vectors for ransomware. The new ransomware data protection capabilities in Kasten K10 plug these gaps, providing an extremely effective defence against ransomware attacks in Kubernetes environments."
This feature is believed to be am industry first, Kasten by Veeam head of product Gaurav Rishi told journalists.
Containers are vulnerable to ransomware due to over-permissioning, a failure to keep the software inside them up to date, and gaps in backup and recovery, he explained.
K10 can't do anything about the first two problems, but it is purpose-built for Kubernetes and version 4.0 provides immutable backups by taking advantage of AWS S3's object locking capability. So attempts by attackers to encrypt backups will fail, and systems can be restored quickly and easily. That also applies to situations where employees maliciously or inadvertently delete files.
K10 even protects its own data this way to help ensure recovery is possible.
Also new to version 4.0 are application-centric policies enabling authorised users to create Kasten K10 policies in an application's namespace for protecting only that specific application, as well as multi-cluster support with advanced automation capabilities for simplified backup and restore.
The software now includes integrations with support for HPE Ezmeral Container Platform, Nutanix Karbon, Red Hat OpenShift, Microsoft Azure Stack. NFS can be used as a backup target.
According to the company, K10 version 4.0 is the most significant update since Kasten was acquired by Veeam.
