Cohesity bolsters ransomware protection with DataGovern and Project Fort Knox

Cohesity's new security and governance services aim to help protect agains ransomware threats.

Cohesity already protects against attacks on production and backup data by supporting rapid restoration and immutable backups.

But attack strategies have changed to exfiltrating the data and then threatening to make it available to others.

So Cohesity has announced DataGovern: a data security and governance service that automates the discovery of sensitive data and detect anomalous access and usage patterns which could indicate a cyberattack in progress.

Once sensitive data is discovered, DataGovern automatically classifies it in line with predefined policies based on regulations such as GDPR, detects behavioural anomalies in near real time (eg, suddenly reading large volumes of sensitive data could indicate an attack is in progress), and in a planned feature, trigger remediation workflows through integration with SOAR platforms.

DataGovern is currently in early access preview.

Project Fort Knox (currently a code name) allows customers to maintain an isolated copy of their data in a Cohesity-managed vault, providing an additional layer of protection against ransomware attacks.

This SaaS product (an early access preview is planned for coming quarters) is said to make it easy to set up a data vault, regularly test attack preparedness by running drills in an isolated environment, and – in the case of a ransomware attack – quickly identify a clean copy of the affected data and recover quickly to an on-premises or cloud system.

"Cohesity continues to help partners address customers' pressing data challenges, and support our status as a trusted advisor on data management. Today's announcement of Cohesity's disaster recovery as a service offering provides a crucial data recovery and business continuity capability for our joint customers, which is vital given the increasing sophistication, aggression, and frequency of ransomware attacks," said Cirrus Networks CEO Chris McLaughlin.

"It's also exciting for Cirrus and our customers to see Cohesity preview their next as a service offering, DataGovern, and introduce Project Fort Knox. These two new cyber threat focused offerings, which are key additions to Cohesity's Threat Defense architecture and DMaaS portfolio, demonstrate how Cohesity's next-gen data management platform is helping customers to protect, detect and recover from ransomware."

Cohesity head of product Matt Waxman said "Cybercriminals are rapidly becoming more sophisticated and aggressive, and the damage ransomware attacks cause to organisations can be catastrophic in terms of costs and brand reputation.

"Relying on legacy backup as an insurance policy no longer is sufficient. Customers need next-gen technology that makes it easy to identify sensitive data, detect anomalies, isolate data, and stay ahead of modern threats. That's what we're focused on providing via our solutions and our Threat Defense architecture."
