Schneider Electric and Intelli-Systems devise a micro data centre as a service solution to ensure better future for Aboriginal people

Energy management and automation company Schneider Electric and business IT firm Intelli-Systems have worked on a micro data service solution to provide management and support services for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council.

Schneider Electric in partnership with Intelli-Systems has developed a micro data centre as a service solution for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council.

Schneider Electric’s service model delivers micro data centres without the need to own, operate, or maintain power, cooling, and integrated IT Server Racking systems. It responds to the growing global trend to manage consumption rather than own the assets.

Schneider Electric says the new solution was signed during NAIDOC Week for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council. The new solution will support over 120 locations in Australia, simplifying its operations, improving capital utilization, and freeing internal resources.

Designed and implemented in conjunction with Intelli-Systems, the four-year contract will see the council make use of a full suite of digitally enabled micro data centres at an agreed monthly rate, which includes management and support services by Schneider.

IT equipment is not included in the solution.

“The micro data centre as-a-Service solution we have developed for NSW Aboriginal Land Council represents an innovative and sustainable approach to deploying data centres for businesses and organisations,” comments Schneider Electric vice president – field services Australia Howard Bowland.

Bowland adds: “The real beauty of the as-a-service approach is reflected by its flexibility, improved efficiencies, convenience and cost-effectiveness when it comes to micro data centres.”

The number of sites and the secure power, cooling, and server racking capacity required can be scaled up or down as needed over the agreement term, all at a pre-agreed cost. Schneider Electric says this model allows efficiencies in planning and budget management.

The customer can avoid the ownership and responsibility for micro data centre hardware and software. This new service includes installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, end-of-life management and a commitment to ensuring uninterrupted power quality, cooling, server racks and supporting equipment for the duration of the client’s agreement.

NSW Aboriginal Land Council Systems procurement manager Hany Tayel describes the service solution as a “perfect fit for our organisation.”

“This model helps the NSW Aboriginal Land Council to continue focusing on protecting the interests of its members and ensuring a better future for Aboriginal people,” Tayel says.

“We can double down our efforts to pursue cultural, social and economic improvements for Aboriginal people in NSW while they manage the micro data centre solution on our behalf as experts in their field. The ability to pay only for what is consumed while being agile with capacity provisioning is critical for our organisation as we transition away from owning and servicing this type of critical infrastructure,” Tayel adds.

Tayel says Capex requests and the unpredictability around costs or lifecycle servicing requirements are no longer a worry for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council.

“As a non-profit organisation, efficient allocation of our capital is critically important as our key remit is the sustainable growth in the economic base for Aboriginal communities via land acquisition, commercial enterprise, and community benefit schemes,” Tayel says. “Our organisation is also cognisant of the environmental factors behind the sustainable acquisition, use, reuse or disposal of this infrastructure.”

Intelli-Systems director Glen Montgomery has worked closely with Schneider Electric to be the first partner to specify and provision this solution to the NSW Aboriginal Land Council.

Says Montgomery: “Our collaboration with Schneider Electric has enabled the customer to transition away from the ownership and management of these Micro Data Centres, accessing their integrated IT supporting infrastructure purely on an as-a-service basis.

“We have worked with Schneider Electric since the inception of our business and are very proud to be key partners in delivering ecostruxure outcomes – secure power as a service for our customer,” Montgomery concludes. This solution solves issues experienced from infrastructure ownership, eliminating any unexpected costs and disruption to their critical IT, networking, and telephony applications. Whether it is aspects of the solution lifecycle or their ability to easily flex up or down capacity, peace of mind is key to the customer.”
