Akamai CDN available from Rackspace

By

A deal between Rackspace and Akamai provides Rackspace customers with easy access to the Akamai content delivery network (CDN).

Rackspace CDN provides the company's customers with integrated access to the Akamai CDN via the Rackspace portal.

The purpose of a CDN is to allow web pages to load more quickly by holding static content on a network of servers that are closer to users than the site itself.

Rackspace cited surveys by Akamai and Gomez.com that found nearly half of web users tend to abandon a site that does not load within three seconds. Furthermore, page load time is one of the signals used by Google to determine page rankings.

"The integration of Akamai's CDN allows all Rackspace customers the opportunity to take advantage of it, no matter whether their infrastructure is dedicated or cloud based," said Matt Johns, Product Manager, Rackspace.

"We've seen demand grow for this technology in our International regions as customers focus on the performance of their digital platform and look for a faster, more reliable way to deliver website content to their customers.

"Therefore, as part of Rackspace's commitment to offering the highest standard of support across a range of technologies, we feel this is an important addition to our managed cloud portfolio."

Charges in the Australia region start at $0.19 per gigabyte for the first 10TB plus $0.0094 for every 10,000 requests ($0.0125 for HTTPS traffic).
