TPG Telecom sets world record for 5G video and voice call Featured

TPG Telecom says it has set a world record for a long-range video and voice call on a 5G network in a new demonstration that shows the reach and capability of the company’s recently switched-on 5G standalone core network.

Working in partnership with its network equipment vendor Nokia, the video and voice call successfully spanned 148km between two commercially available 5G handsets that connected to a single tower in Mt England, Queensland, TPG Telecom says.

TPG Telecom said the tower was connected to it’s recently switched-on 5G standalone core network which is using spectrum in the 700MHz band to increase the reach and capability of its mobile services across more of Australia.

Lower spectrum bands, like the 700MHz used by TPG Telecom in this demonstration, are superior at reaching across wide distances and providing deep indoor 5G coverage in urban and suburban areas.

In setting the world record, Nokia and TPG Telecom say they have shown it is possible to connect customers at a distance of 74km from the tower.

“This record-setting achievement has really pushed the boundaries of what was previously thought possible with 5G networks. For us at TPG Telecom, this is not just a world record, it is a real-life demonstration of how we are building a smarter network to connect customers across greater distances than ever before,” said TPG Telecom general manager wireless & transmission networks Yago Lopez.

“This will lead to important leaps in capability for our network while also ensuring we can maximise the rollout and coverage of our 5G network to deliver the connectivity benefits of 5G technology to more Australian homes and businesses.”

The claimed new record coincides with the recent switch-on of TPG Telecom’s 5G standalone core network which tripled the telco’s 5G coverage to over 85% of the population in ten of Australia’s largest cities and regions.

Telstra and Ericsson had claimed a 5G SA data call cell range record of 113km, using 850MHz spectrum back in June. The Telstra and Ericsson data call was done with the network optimised to achieve this long distance.

A TPG spokesperson said, "Nokia achieved the long distance call with a combination of extended cell range features improving the uplink path loss and delay tolerance of the random access procedure which results in extended coverage to the end users."  That is, they made network adjustments, similar to Ericsson and Telstra, to facilitate longer distances.

Records are all a bit arbitrary, 700MHz will have a better range than 850MHz as lower frequencies will propagate further.  What is good for all Australian mobile users is that 5G when deployed at frequencies below 1GHz provides very effective coverage, demonstrated by both TPG Telecom and Telstra with support by their vendors Nokia and Ericsson.

All three mobile carriers in Australia will reallocate 3G and 4G spectrum in the lower spectrum bands to 5G as the demand for older technologies declines through normal technology lifecycle trends and more active migration programs.

    BT underlined its ongoing commitment to the development and deployment of Open RAN technology by announcing details of a trial with Nokia taking place in the city of Hull, UK. BT will install Nokia’s RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) for Open RAN, across a number of sites, to optimise network performance for customers of its mobile network, EE.

    BT says it is committed to sustained investment in all technologies that deliver the best possible customer experience, including using open architecture wherever network performance can be enhanced. BT is therefore developing Open RAN, with its vendor partners, to ensure it becomes a viable, mature, scale option for network optimisation as soon as possible.

    BT says its focus is always on providing the highest possible quality of experience. So far, it has launched 5G across hundreds of towns and cities via its EE mobile network, giving its customers faster speeds, a more reliable service and near instant connections to content. EE’s 5G network will cover more than half the UK population by 2023 (four years ahead of current Government ambitions), delivering 5G connectivity solutions anywhere in the UK by 2028 and complete the country’s only fully converged network by the mid-2020s, the company claimed.

  • Nokia and Alstom to deploy private wireless to support high-speed commuter rail network in India

    Nokia announced it is working with Alstom to deliver a private wireless network for the National Capital Regional Transport Corporation’s (NCRTC) Delhi to Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

    It will support European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 Signaling to maintain safety for commuters on the high-speed rail route, currently under construction, Nokia said.

    The Delhi to Meerut RRTS is the first in a phased development of a high-speed rail network that aims to enable sustainable economic and social development through enhanced connectivity in Delhi and the surrounding districts. Expected to be fully operational in 2025, the low-emission RRTS will transport more people at average speeds of 100 kmph to reduce travel time and road congestion.

    Nokia says the fully redundant private network, based on the Nokia Modular Private Wireless solution (MPW) including its latest AirScale radios, Air Frame-based evolved packet core capabilities, the 7250 IXR IP/MPLS backhaul routers, Group Communication platform for mission-critical push to talk/video (MCx/GC) and Network Services Platform (NSP) management, will span the 82 km rail route which incorporates 25 stations.

    The private network is being deployed to support ETCS Level 2 & 3 signaling as well as automated operation (ATO), which enables trains to use radio signals to continuously receive their movement authorities and to report their exact direction and position to ensure the safety of all on board. The introduction of LTE/4.9G technology for ETCS is an important asset for railway operators and will pave the way for a smooth transition to FRMCS (Future Railway Communication System), Nokia said.

    Alstom Transport India managing director digital mobility Thameem Kamaldeen said, “We are pleased to work with Nokia, leveraging its extensive private wireless capabilities for the advanced signaling system that we are providing for NCRTC. The new high-speed rail network will help to transform the region.”

    Spatial data company Matterport has appointed Ben Corser to the role of APAC managing director.

  • Nokia, SK Telecom collaborate on new virtualised RAN network in Korea
    in 5G

    Nokia and SK Telecom have successfully completed a proof-of-concept (PoC) and demonstration of what they claim is the world's first 5G 64TRX wireless-based cloud Radio Access Network (vRAN) in Korea.

    Nokia says the trial highlighted it's technological leadership in wireless network architecture. Both companies plan to start field testing a vRAN in 2022.

    The demonstration included the process of virtualising the baseband based on Nokia's design, including its infrastructure solutions such as NADCM (Nokia AirFrame Data Center Manager), separating hardware and software, and operating each independently. In particular, the network flexibility and performance were tested at the same time by dividing the infrastructure into two separate functions: a cloudified virtual distributed unit (vDU) and a virtual central unit (vCU), Nokia says.

    Through this 5G vRAN demonstration, both companies were able to confirm the agile response to computing requirements such as high performance, large capacity and the possibility of rapidly launching new services.

    SK Telecom vice president and head of infra technology office Jongkwan Park said, “Through the verification of 5G cloud RAN technology provided by Nokia, SK Telecom, as a leader of the evolution of 5G wireless network architecture, was able to confirm its technological prowess once again.

    Nokia head of Korea Kevin Ahn said, “This demonstration once again confirms the leadership of both companies in 5G technology, and serves as an opportunity for full-scale commercialisation of 5G vRAN.

    "We will continue to actively cooperate with SK Telecom to quickly introduce market-leading services based on the best 5G network.”

  • TPG Telecom and Telstra offering free calls to Tonga

    TPG Telecom and Telstra are making calls to Tonga free-of-charge to allow those in Australia with family and friends in to the Pacific Island nation to connect.

    TPG Telecom says it is making mobile phone calls to Tonga free-of-charge across its family of brands for the next two weeks to help customers reconnect with loved ones in the Pacific Island nation.

    TPG Telecom is now allowing customers across its Vodafone, Kogan and Lebara brands to make free-rated standard mobile calls to Tonga for two weeks starting Friday 21 January and ending on the night of Thursday 3 February 2022.

    TPG Telecom said it's other brands, including TPG, iiNet, Westnet and Internode will also allow free standard calls to Tonga between the same dates. A small number of customers may still see charges related to Tonga calls during this period, in which case, TPG Telecom invites them to please contact their service provider for a full credit.

    Telstra group executive consumer and small business Michael Ackland said, "We want to help how we can, so we’re making it easier to get in touch and to stay on the phone with loved ones. To do this we’ll be waiving charges for calls to Tonga from Telstra home phones and post-paid mobiles from midnight tonight (Friday) for the next seven days. This offer isn’t available for pre-paid mobile calls at this stage, but we’ll be monitoring the situation and will extend this offer – and the time it’s available – if needed."

    TPG Telecom general manager products and devices Arthur Panos said, “We are heartbroken to see the tragic events that have taken place in Tonga, and to see the ripple effect it has had on the people of Tonga, Tongan Australians and the worldwide Tongan community.

    “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster, and we hope this small gesture to help our customers reconnect will provide some support and comfort,” Panos concluded.

    Telstra is also working with Digicel Tonga to restore connectivity, Ackland commented,  "While we haven’t completed our acquisition of Digicel Pacific yet, we’re in regular contact with the team to offer our support. Fortunately, the Digicel Tonga team are all OK.

    "We have teams from across the business working with the Digicel Pacific technical team on a satellite communications solution to help restore some communications.

    "We’ve worked alongside the Australian Government to get the first batch of satellite equipment shipped on an RAAF flight, which has arrived and another shipment is on the way. This has helped the Digicel Tonga team start to progressively restore services, which is why we’re now able to offer free calls," Ackland concluded.

    Infrastructure within Tonga has been damaged, so while the two carriers have both stepped up admirably to support customers, calls may not get through until adequate capacity between Australia and Tonga is established and the services in Tonga are restored.   Please retry later if you fail to initially connect.
